In the beginning there was the dance: Raks Sharqi, or Oriental dance, which arrived in the U.S. in 1876 and is now known as bellydance. American bellydance blends cultures and trends, music and dance, interprets it all through the dancer's movements, and creates a dance form unlike any other. See its exotic "Evolution" at two performances this weekend as each performer brings her own unique style to the traditional Middle Eastern dance: Ethnic folk dances and classical cabaret by Janette Benedon Brenner (who also produces the show) and the Park Avenue Dancers; American cabaret by Jamaica; world fusion by BellySema and international star Crystal Silmi, whose unique fusion style incorporates tribal, Flamenco, cabaret, hip-hop and a blend of other dance forms as the evolution continues.
