The singularity of Carmel's third ever Concours on the Avenue stems from its fusion of unwavering expectations of excellence and its sensitivity to the not-so-die-hard car freaks among us. It's "sophistication with a dash of fun," as event organizer Doug Friedland, founder and chair of Motor Club Events, LLC., puts it. On the one hand, prestigious awards, including Best in Show, will be handed out to the automobiles that meet the strict standards of "authenticity, originality, [and] presentation" among the 200 entrants. On the other, Friedland says, is the "chocolate box movie set" that is Carmel-by-the-Sea, where those who dragged their feet to get to the Concours will be entertained by the Concours in the Window, the synchronized transformation of 16 blocks of downtown shop fronts into automobilia displays. This is no mere carshow; this is a living, breathing space where car connoiseur and boutique maven can convenably enjoy the spirit and camaraderie of cars and Carmel, alike.
