By the time the Fleet Foxes' self-titled debut in 2008 made critics and music fans salivate, the band's drummer and vocalist J. Tillman had already been putting out his own solo works for three years. His "James Blues" is a superb acoustic ballad with hand claps and piano, while the fact that Tillman has covered both Texas singer/songwriter Townes Van Zandt and slowcore indie group Low scores major points. According to Rolling Stone Magazine, Tillman killed at a solo performance at this year's South By Southwest Festival. Writer David Fricke wrote: "Tillman stunned a packed club to attention with bare minimum versions of 'James Blues' and 'Master's House.'" [ST]
