As a prelude to Sunday's 2009 grand finale screening, the Library screens 2008's winners tonight. They include a quirky, angry number called Bitch (U.S.), a charming and slightly uneasy short about a boy who thinks he's a dog (Koest, Netherlands), Traumalogia (Spain), Anolit (Norway), last year's winner The Danish Poet, a precocious fable about coincidence and fate. But the real stunner was the Czech Republic's The Torchbearer, a gothic, hard-to-describe stop-action marrionette meditation on...I still haven't figured it out. But maybe you can. Popcorn served under the stars. [WR]
