Western Stage's Studio Theater presents Nilo Cruz's Pulitzer Prize-winning look at a 1929 cuban immigrant family's life and times in Anna and the Tropics. Set in Ybor City, Tampa's cigar making district in the 1920s, the play depicts a family of illiterate cigar makers, who would hire a lector to read while they worked. When a new lector arrives, reading Anna Karenina, a set of circumstances parallel to the Tolstoy novel play out with similarly tragic results. Runs until Sept. 13. [MC]
8pm Fri-Sat; 2pm Sun. Western Stage Studio Theater, 411 Central Ave., Salinas. $20/adult; $17/junior, senior or military. 755-6816, 759-6012. http://www.westernstage.com.
