Thirty-something years ago, Luis Valdez adapted the centuries-old story of a group of shepherds traveling through the desert to greet the newborn Messiah in Bethlehem. Along the way, they were beset by obstacles and trickery and temptation by devils including Luzbel (Eduardo Robledo) and Santanas (Christy Sandoval). Luis' son Kinan describes the work as a morality tale of good and bad forces fighting over the sould of human, filtered through San Juan's Mexican and Mexican-American traditions. Performed biennially, it's gotten bigger over the years, with the colorful pageantry, rousing folk music and vigorous choreography that's become the hallmark of El Teatro productions, this year directed by Adrian Torres and performed in Spanish with English librettos. It plays in the magnificent Mission through Dec. 20. (See Theater story.) [WR]
