Africa and African-American culture near and far get the spotlight during Black History Month, starting with a whole slate of events this weekend at the Steinbeck Center. Friday (in conjunction with Salinas' First Friday) begins with a 5-8pm reception for Renderings, an art exhibit of early California works, community memorabilia, and archival photos and stories. Saturday, 9am-4pm, offers Quintard Taylor Jr., a University of Washington professor, who speaks on "The African American Search for the California Dream"; CSUMB faculty discuss the African diaspora in the Americas; and philosophy professor John Berteaux moderating a panel of community leaders like Mae Johnson and Helen Rucker, preceded by the Seaside History Project's Carol McKibben. Sunday, noon-5pm, the Africano Cultural Celebration and Community Free Day fills Steinbeck Center with vendors bearing clothes, art, textiles and soul food. Right. On. [WR]
