Self-described as a memory, a monologue, a rant, and a prayer, Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues address double standards, menstrual cycles, adolescents prematurely having sex, date rape and more. That isn’t to say it’s not funny—a woman attacks the cold sharp utensils that violate her vagina during a pap smear, as well as a skit about a dominatrix performing her career. Every year a new monologue is introduced. The monologues are a keystone of V-Day: Founded on Valentine’s Day in 1988, its mantra is Valentine, vagina and victory. The production backs up those words. The Vagina Monologues have been a critical and highly publicized effort to raise awareness and funds for women who are victimized by sexual assault. CSUMB’s annual production stars, and is directed by, student college players. Due to its mature content, children are not encouraged to attend. [SK]
