Burlesque predates the pole, the clear heels and the bad boob jobs.
Gypsy Rose Lee and Mae West are big names that pioneered the American strip tease (which was already a sensation at the Moulin Rouge in France.) It’s not solely about shimmering the pasties. It’s legitimate entertainment that's making its come back with performers like Dita Von Teese (Marilyn Manson’s out of this world hot ex-wife). Chica Boom Productions shows off the multiple talents of their femme fatales—who sing, tell jokes, interact with the audience and even dance Flamenco. It’s kind of like a kinky talent show with an appearance by Foul Folk, one man with an acoustic guitar, singing, well, dirty folk songs. Rounding out the outlandish evening is Mezmeron the Naughty Hypnotist, who exposes audience members’ wanton desires. [SK]
