Cellist Carlos Prieto and his son, conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto--two of Mexico's top classical musicians--make their Monterey Symphony debut together in a program called Music of Mexico. The senior Prieto coaxes a deep, sonorous sound from his cello, ranging from mournful to sprightly, contemplative to quick. The junior Preito is a Harvard and Princeton grad who was, among many other accolades, named "Conductor of the Year 2002" by the Mexican Union of Music and Theater Critics. They apply their considerable gifts to Mexican composer Federico Ibarra's Cello Concerto, The Suite from Redes by Silvestre Revueltas, and Schumann's Fourth Symphony. (See Music story.) [WR]
