This tragic opera by Gaetano Donizetti is based on Sir Walter Scott's "historical" novel The Bride of Lammermoor, a story about a woman betrothed by arranged marriage to a rich heir, but in love with a penniless man. The three act opera is arguably Donizetti's most popular, not least of which for the famous "Mad Scene" in which the new bride, Lucia, commits a terrible act to free herself from the loveless marriage. It's a demanding and technical number that's been performed by Maria Callas and Dame Joan Sutherland, and in this Metropolitan Opera production, by Anna Netrebko.
