Salinas Stories at Salinas Libraries

The three-month long Salinas Stories series, which chronicles and reflects on the history of the county's largest city from 1935-1959, visits two libraries and a school this week. Thursday, at 6:30pm, the Alvarez High School Thespian Society enact scenes from The World of the Word, a play about the 1909 founding of the Salinas Public Library at Cesar Chavez Library (615 Williams Road, 758-7345). Saturday, from 1:30-5pm, community members share their stories of Salinas during WWII, including life on the homefront and Japanese internment (the Salinas Assembly Center was a holding center), which takes place at the John Steinbeck Library (350 Lincoln Ave., 758-7311). Sunday, back at Cesar Chavez Library, a book group convenes to discuss North From Mexico: The Spanish-Speaking People of the United States by Carey McWilliams. Starting Monday, folks are invited to interview loved ones for a nationally touring MobileBooth program for the Library of Congress and public radio stations like KAZU (800-850-4406).
