Lou Reed recently allowed, in an interview with Elvis Costello on the Sundance Channel, that his initial inspirations were greaser-rockers like Dion and the Belmonts. In a tribute to that era, the Sunset Center features "Best of Doo Wop,’’ with three original groups and a tribute band from those bygone days. Performers include The Four Preps, Danny and the Juniors (who could forget “At The Hop’’?) and a tribute to the Drifters, with original member Bruce Belland. A photo exhibit of vintage cars in keeping with the ‘50s and ‘60s theme will also be on display in the Marjorie Eveans Gallery through the end of January. (To see photographer Mike Micklich’s work online, check out http://www.car-tography.com.) Meanwhile, back at the Doo Wop opening, Joe Terry, one of the original members of Danny and the Juniors, will speak at Studio 105 at 7pm before the show to talk about the group’s role in rock history. Patrons are encouraged to come in their best ‘50s threads; the best dressed will win an 8x10 framed photo by Micklick. [PW]
8pm. Sunset Center, San Carlos between Eighth and Ninth, Carmel. $40-$50. 620-2048. http://www.sunsetcenter.org.
