Charged with telling a compelling story that invites the viewer into a "bold and uncensored" world—and maybe making us laugh, if that isn't too much to ask—the Big Sur International Short Film Festival returns for magical nights of short bursts of cinema that fly in from across the globe. Screenings take place Thursdays at 8:30pm through Aug. 30; a special screening of last year's winners goes down Aug. 27. This is a refreshing series that cleanses the palate of Hollywood schlock and restores faith in film—and filmmakers. The Library enlists folks who are long on talent like Woody Harrelson, Laurie Anderson, cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond and others as judges. [WR]
8pm. Henry Miller Library, Highway 1, 5 miles south of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, Big Sur. Free; donations appreciated. 667-2574. http://www.henrymiller.org.
