La Mirada's newest exhibit, "Over Rainbows and Down Rabbit Holes: The Art of Children's Books," transports the viewer through time (but goes away this weekend) with the help of classic illustrators like Ernest Shepard (The House at Pooh Corner) and Trina Schart Hyman (Little Red Riding Hood). The exhibition features 70 original illustrations from well known children's books like The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Travels of Babar, and Jumanji. The chosen works transcend storybook pictures to form a connection between visual and verbal literacy, according to Zora Charles, who assembled the collection. “Any competent artist can paint a picture to demonstrate what the words say,” she says. “But the great illustrators use the words as a key to unlock a magical, visual universe.” Story time takes place at the exhibition every Saturday at 2pm. Exhibition runs until September 13. [MC]
