The 72nd season of one of the most highly regarded Bach Festivals in the world is rendered more poignant this year by the recent announcement that legendary music director Bruno Weil will be retiring after the 2010 season. Nothing daunted, this year's festivities continue, with more than 90 events, from concerts of major works for orchestra and chorus to recitals and chamber ensemble and choral performances, feature films, pre-concert dinners and talks, vocal master classes and much, much more. The July 17 opening night reception and concert will feature sparkling wine-aperitifs, fruit, cheese and other bites in a toast to the new season, along with a performance of Hayden's oratorio "The Creation,'' featuring the Festival Orchestra, Chorale and Soloists led by Maestro Weil, a noted Haydn expert. Other notable recitals include a Viennese Matinee Concertante on July 25 and Aug. 1; an all-Bach solo organ recital at the Carmel Mission Basilica on July 20 and 27; performances of The London Pleasure Garden on Mondays, July 20 and 27; Soulful Cantatas on Tuesdays July 21 and 28 at All Saints Church; Love, Valor and Compassion on Wednesdays, July 22 and 29 at Church of the Wayfarer; "Heroic Beethoven on Thursdays July 23 and 30 at the Church of the Wayfarer and Adams Vocal Master Classes on Mondays, July 20 and 27 and Thursdays July 16, 23 and 30 at Carmel Presbyterian Church. New this year will be screenings of the films "Les Choristes (The Chorus)'' on Saturday, July 18 at the Sunset Center and the Central Coast premiere of "The Singing Revolution'' on Saturday, July 25. And, again, much more. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Mendelssohn and the death of Haydn; the festival will feature the works of these artists and of many others.
