This legendary duo of wise-cracking singer-songwriter-comedians have lasted longer than Simon & Garfunkel (and are a lot funnier). They've been doing their intelligent, civilized, left-leaning brand of political folk songs and goofy sibling rivalry routines for 51 years, earning the distinction of being the long-running comedy duo. In the '60s, their Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour attracted hot talent like Steve Martin, Rob Reiner, recent Golden State Theatre visitors Joan Baez and Donovan, Harry Belefonte and others. But the duo ventured into more controversial political waters, prompting CBS to cancel the show, which later won an Emmy for Best Writing. More recently, the two have appeared on TV and films (most notably Dick's turn as a Nevada state senator in Scorsese's Casino), Tommy is the proud vintner of organic Sonoma County vineyard Remick Ridge, and they still tour together. Not bad for a couple of San Jose State grads. [WR]
