The late, great Giacomo Puccini based his famed opera Madama Butterfly on actual events that took place in the Japanese city of Nagasaki in the early 1890s. Its music and libretto--reworked five times by Puccini--have elevated it to the most performed opera in the U.S. The Metropolitan Opera first staged the work in 1906 and the opera, led by its signature aria "Un bel di vedromo," proves its staying power with this HD satellite broadcast of the Met's 2009 production.
