Even if you don't know composer Gioachino Rossini or his 1817 opera, you'll recognize the story (with slight variations) of a young girl much put-upon by her wicked stepfather, who seeks deliverance from a philosopher, and loses her bracelet at a ball for a prince. Sound familiar? Here the girl's name is the Italian Cenerentola, but we know her as Cinderella. After initial dissatisfaction, audiences have warmed to the rich music that accompanies the happily ever after story (that isn't varied), making it a top 20 most-performed production. The Met should add magic to their performance, broadcast across the nation live via satellite. [WR]
