This is it. A classical music concert for devotees and for those who don't think they like classical music. For the latter, this music has graced--and augmented--films like Star Trek VI, The Right Stuff and Return of the Jedi. See a theme? The Planets is composer Gustav Holst's magnus opus (not his only, but his most enduring). And this weekend (Saturday at Sherwood Hall, Sunday and Monday at Sunset Center), the Monterey Symphony performs all seven glorious movements, corresponding to the planets of the solar system--Earth was excluded on purpose and Pluto wasn't yet discovered--preceded by Faure's Pavane, Op. 50 and Vaughan-William's' Serenade to Music. The symphony's executive director, Joseph Tuskot, promises heavenly celestial voices from the Monterey Symphony Chorus. Do yourself a favor and attend this aural spectacle. Imagine what Holst would have thought, from his perch in the early 1900s, of man doing repairs on a space telescope that can see millennia into the universe's infant-hood... [WR]
