Ah. Love. Such a simple phenomenon that holds such complexity that, thousands of years after humanity started marking it, it still eludes us. Well, that didn't stop storyteller Joseph Stein and composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz from tackling its ever-changing dynamics. The life of this musical has been rocky, but there's emotional resonance in its story of a newlywed couple's entry into a village in Provence, France, who are subjected to tests of their relationship, only to have their newly adopted village intervene in order to keep the fresh bread flowing. Western Stage's Oct. 3 performance marks their 35th year with their fourth annual gala benefit in the Main Stage Theater Lobby; summer evening attire is recommended for the $75 gala. RSVP 755-6810.
