The bidding war was breathtaking. Given the placard flapping of two kind-hearted women, the auction action climbed mighty high, ultimately settling somewhere near $15,000. But this precusor ultimately paled compared to what came next, a moment where the right to grant flight to a rescued and rehabbed great horned owl was distributed, and somehow seemed worth the benevolently generous pricetag. There are other quite worthy feathers in the wing that lifts the Wild—a thoughtfully laid out silent auction, the hallowed hacienda grounds themselves, the tasty vittles and high-grade wines—but it's in the moment the regal raptors take flight that eyes go as wide as the owl's as its cushioned carrier box opens, hearts surge involuntarily at its indescribable ascension into the golden valley afternoon, and well more than one tear falls—as silently as the owl's flight—from gratefully stunned and thankful eyes.
