What transpires when a soldier leaves the battlefield and returns home? José Cruz González examines that old question with a new play about historic time, The Heart’s Desire, starring Miles Gaston Villanueva. He plays John Guerrero, a Mexican-American World War II veteran who wrestles to reconcile the changes he underwent during the war with the expectations of those awaiting him in his small California hometown. Other develpments complicate things further. His bride, Rachel (Beatrice Basso), is a French woman who must bridge the cultural gap with John’s family, though she speaks little Spanish and no English. Cain Moya Camargo is John’s best friend Chicote, a labor procurer who struggles to accept that John is no longer the small-town tough guy he was before the war. [MC]
