He was the Paul Shaffer of his time. When Johnny Carson finally stepped down from The Tonight Show, he paid tribute to his longtime sidekicks Ed McMahon and Doc Severinsen, the leader of the band. Known for his wild outfits and offbeat repartee, Severinsen made a great counterpart to the buttoned-down Nebraskan. The trumpet player, who moved to Mexico in 2006, is making his way to Monterey for a benefit for the Monterey Symphony's music and education programs. His six-person combo, including Gil Gutierrez on bass and Pedro Cartas on violin, will perform "El Ritmo de la Vida (The Rhythm of Life)". A special fiesta, in the bandleader's honor, takes place on the upper terrace after the performance. [PW]
3pm. Sunset Center, San Carlos between Eighth and Ninth, Carmel. $25-$50/performance; $75/fiesta. 620-2048, 646-8511. http://www.sunsetcenter.org.
