Carmel Treasures: Auction for the Arts at Sunset Center

This innaugural event is being billed as the "single largest art collection to ever be offered in a public sale in Carmel." Considering that Carmel is home to the most art galleries per capita in the country, that's saying something. This high-flung affair marshalls more than 300 works of art from more than 50 galleries--from Alternative Cafe to Romanoos Gallery to Thomas Kinkade Galleries and beyond--and includes work by Steven Whyte, Johnny Apodaca, Simon Bull, Michelle Magdalena, Lillie Anne, Sam Colburn and more. Some works have no reserve so any bid takes the cake. Online bidding has started, but as of Sept. 3, only one work that I could find had been bid upon--an $800 offer for an Eyvind Earle serigraph listed at $3,100. A silent preview auction on Friday, Sept. 11, will fix that. The main event the next day, though, with its strolling dinner and wine pourings and live sculpting 'til 10pm, should be a frenzy.
