45th Annual Carmel Mission Fiesta

Stepping into the courtyard of Carmel Mission transports the visitor back in time--a time of Ohlone Native-American villages, Spanish expansion, simple survival dynamics and powerful religious symbolism. This commemoration of Saint Charles Borromeo is a bit more civilized, starting with an 11am Mass in the Basilica, followed by a procession into the courtyard, where awaits barbecue and Mexican food, music by a mariachi band and Chicano All Stars, margaritas, beer and wine, arts and crafts for sale and kids games for diversion. A drawing offers up enticing prizes, but a day of remembrance in this historic site offers up reward enough. [WR]
11am-5pm. Carmel Mission Basilica and Museum, 3080 Rio Road, Carmel. Free to attend. 206-5273.
