Director Ken Burns rolls out a 12 hour series that was six years in the making, depicting breathtaking landscapes from 53 of the United States' 58 national parks. The series, "The National Parks: America's Best Idea" premieres Sunday, Sept. 27, at noon on KQED with encores at 4pm, 8pm and 10pm. The series continues at 8pm throughout the rest of the week. To compliment the series, KQED and KTEH present two documentaries highlighting public lands in the Bay Area. "This is Us," premiering Sunday at 6pm on KTEH, profiles the lives of seven Bay Area residents who were instrumental in the creation and preservation of the region's national lands and historic areas. "Bringing the Parks to the People" airs on Tuesday at 7:30pm, and examines the Golden Gate National Recreation Areas. To celebrate the series REI Marina will host "Get Involved!" a public event Oct. 21 where the public can find out about local stewardship and conservation activities. (see story) [MC]
