The Monterey Jazz Festival will be continuing its efforts to keep jazz alive at its Next Generation Festival, with 63 big bands, combos and vocal ensembles from 13 states, from Alaska (notwithstanding Sarah Palin) to Texas (not withstanding George W. Bush) and 13 California Counties, under the watchful, gorgeous eye of artist-in-residence/vocalist Dianne Reeves. A free kick-off concert at the Monterey Conference Center on Friday, April 9 will include performances by competition judges including pianist Alan Pasqua, drummer Teri Lyne Carrington, saxopophonists Billy Harper, Mary Fettig, and Aaron Lington; trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusiere; bassist Ray Drummond, and vocalists Matt Falker, Jennifer Barnes, and Michele Wei. Ms. Reeves will perform later in the evening. The kids begin their swinging competition in earnest the next morning, Saturday, April 10, and they are a sight fior the eyes to see and the ears to behold. Top groups from the High School Vocal, Combo and Big Band divisions will be announced Saturday night from the Conference Center's Serra Ballroom stage, followed by performances by the top vocal ensembles, combos and big band finalists. The Festival is also conducting workshops, jam sessions and auditions at the Conference Center, Portola Plaza Hotel, Fiseherman's Wharf and Cannery Row. (See Music story.) [PW]
