PacRep launches its new season with literary heavyweight Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, a dark, psychological meditation on the state of a man's mind as a reflection of the state of the society around him. Raskolnikov, a school drop-out in St. Petersburg, justifies a murder, intellectually and philosophically, not just for the money, but to extinguish what he perceives as an evil person. But does he succeed? Detective Porfiry begins to suspect the young man, who struggles to keep the secret from all except Sonia, a morally righteous prostitute. This "streamlined" adaptation won a Joseph Jefferson Award. The book is simply a masterpiece of existential literature. Director Kenneth Kelleher, who brought us Blue Room last year, has a way with daring material. A bold first step.
