Thom Steinbeck, the son of the Nobel Prize-winning author, will be appearing at the NationaL Steinbeck Center's Meet the Author series as part of the launch of his new novel, In The Shadow of the Cypress. The novel deals with the little told history of the Chinese in Monterey. When an ancient Chinese jade seal with an inscribed plaque written in languages lost to everyone but scholars of antiquity washes up on the shores of the Monterey Coast, it finds its way into the hands of a "wayward Irishman'' and a marine scholar jointly determined to discover its se"There are two Steinbecks in the world, one is John and one is Thom, and the are twins in exçellence,'' no less than Ray Bradbury has said.
