Hark! Good news for local theater returns in the form of Magic Circle Theatre's reincarnation, as reported here back in, appropriately, November. After four years of staging top-rate theater like the local premier of Larmie Project, Agnes of God and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and after a subsequent 5 1/2 year hibernation, founder Dr. Elsa Con throws open the doors of their original Carmel Valley 60-seat theater for the first play of their return season, David Mamet's November (a local Mamet revival is okay by us). Directed by Dr. Con, the play follows a beleaguered U.S. president, Charles Smith, juggling low approval ratings, a staff suffering low morale, a lesbian speechwriter who wants to marry her sweetie on national TV, a cynical chief of staff (pre-Rahm Emanuel, fyi) and a pissed off Native American, all while teetering on the precipice of nuclear war. The San Francisco Examiner called the work "savage merriment." That sounds like Mamet. First Plaza Linda sparks up the night, now Magic Circle—things are stirring in unincorporated CV. [WR]
