49th Annual Wildflower Show and Native Plant Garden at Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History

The Wildflower Show, founded by Vern Yadon and Beatrice Howitt (who also founded the Monterey Bay chapter of the California Native Plant Society) 49 years ago, blooms big as ever, cramming more than 600 species of Central Coast wildflowers and plants into the museum's rotating exhibits hall. Last year I took a picture of their sample of poison hemlock, sent it to my nieces, and got back a half dozen photos they took of the stuff growing near their house. Fascinating learning--and practical, too, especially with CNPS folk on hand to answer questions and scientific illustrator John Muir Laws giving a wildflower sketch class 2pm Friday and Sunday. As a prelude, the museum debuts its long-awaited Native Plant Garden 11:30am Thursday, and Eleanor Athens guides garden tours noon Saturday and Sunday. The greening of Pacific Grove. [WR]
