The Seattle alt-rock quartet The Taphandles recently released its first, self-titled EP. The album features heart-on-the-sleeve ballads like “Running” and recalls the acoustic work of bands like The Samples. Santa Cruz’s Birdhouse plays in the improvised spirit of The Grateful Dead. “Sunflower Blue” has an obvious “Scarlet Begonias” ring to it and the instrumental on the tune “Wooden Birds” has a free-form sensibility reminiscent of John Coltrane’s Interstellar Space.
