British playwright Tom Stoppard wrote influential plays like 1967's Rozencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead and The Real Thing, though his movie screenwriting credits are also stellar, adding Terry Gilliam's Brazil and Shakespeare in Love to his resume. Western Stage takes on the award-winning playwright's politically charged Rock 'n' Roll, about a Czech freedom fighter doing intellectual battle with a far-left Marxist, the two happening to be best of friends. The New York Times says this work is as sentimental as the cerebral Stoppard gets, and with a soundtrack of '60s and '70s icons Bob Dylan, The Stones, Velvet Underground and The Beatles, its story of Czech unrest and politics, love and betrayal, this promises lively theater action. It runs through Aug. 22. [WR]
