Electronic bands always try to have the clubs they’re playing be as dark as possible for three reasons: 1) so that they can shower the crowd with laser effects 2) people dance a whole different way when in a dark room and 3) to brood. Neu:Era belong to the last category. With Robert Lindemann’s dirge-worthy vocals, they sound like a darker, more melancholy version of Depeche Mode played in slow motion and much like their electric brooding peers VNV Nation, Neu:Era's songs speak of power struggles, new empires/worlds and gods. But since electronic/synth pop acts can’t worry about the impending dystopia all the time, there are naturally the songs about girls. When Neu:Era lets their guard down, they let themselves make some fairly lovely synth melodies like on the as-happy-as-we’re-going-to-get “Never Betray Me Again.” [LC]
9pm. Jose's Lounge Underground , 638 Wave St., Monterey. $5. 406-0127, 655-4419.
