RENT at Monterey Peninsula College Morgan Stock Theater

RENT takes place in "Alphabet City," a run-down but youthful neighborhood in New York, but many of its stories are starkly real. Loosely based on Giacomo Puccini's opera La Boheme, but set in the early '90s, it follows the story of a band of friends—including musician and former heroin addict Roger, HIV-positive stripper and dancer Mimi, and filmmaker Mark—as they struggle with drugs, AIDS, poverty and betrayal, while embracing love, creativity and each other. The modern musical debuted off-Broadway to tragedy when auteur/creator Jonathan Larson died of an aneurysm the night before it opened, but has since stacked triumph on triumph, winning a Tony and a Pulitzer, earning nearly continuous tours and translations across the globe, from Finland to Brazil to Korea to Russia, raking in hundreds of millions, sealing the seventh longest run on Broadway, getting adapted into a movie and turning on countless audiences to its story of despair and hope. It gets evicted from the Morgan Stock stage Aug. 22. [WR]
