The BLUE Ocean Film Festival, born last year in Savannah, Georgia, pulled up stakes and made Monterey its permanent home—a perfect fit, forged from mutual adoration of the ocean, which is the theme for this sprawling six-day affair of underwater filmmakers and photographers, oceanographers, scientists, technicians and other professionals enamored with the ocean. It's studded with more than 60 film screenings at Golden State Theatre, Cannery Row IMAX and Osio Theaters, with many filmmakers in attendance; symposiums, workshops and photo exhibitions at Portola Plaza Hotel and Monterey Conference Center; ocean-centric activities for kids at presenting sponsor Monterey Bay Aquarium, and breakout film festival screenings for web shorts; parties and mixers all over the place (with rumors floating of celebrity attendees); industry heavies roaming Alvarado, like the head of Disneynature Jean-Francois Camilleri and the grandchildren of Jacques Cousteau. BLUE will make an impact--both on our consciousness about the ocean, with reverberations, they hope, on the health of the ocean. [WR]
