With one prepubescent autotuned headache emerging after another I'd pretty much written off most of the next generation when it comes to music. After about five minutes of listening to Population 5's debut album, The Descendants of Billy, my faith was restored. This Salinas rock band is one of the most promising group of musicians to emerge from the area and oh yeah, the main songwriter, singer Sam Griffin-Ortiz, is only 14. Listening to the album, there are hints of influence from many plain ol' rock n' roll bands like The White Stripes, Queens of the Stone Age even The Rolling Stones yet the music sounds unbelievably fresh. While Sam's voice croons a lot deeper than you'd expect, his younger sister Emma's, fiery performance on "Run Away" will stun you to learn she's only 11. All involved shine brightest on the tour de force "Virgin Birth of Sympathy." Note to parents: very good things can happen if you purposefully leave your old records out for your kids to thumb through. [LC]
