Don Carlo at Century Cinemas

The Met Live in HD brings Don Carlo to Century Cinemas. This epic tale is the quintessential Verdi opera, which first premiered at the Paris Opera House in 1867. It covers the conflict between Prince Don Carlo and his father, Phillip II King of Spain, during the mid-16th century. The story covers the sordid dealings of politics and how they relate to family, marriage, and love. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts what is Verdi's longest opera, and has an all-star cast to work with. Roberto Alagna takes on the title role, and is accompanied by Marina Poplavskaya, Anna Smirnova, and Ferruccio Furlanetto. Sung in Italian (subtitled in English), with two half-hour intermissions, this masterpiece takes a 5 hour bite out of Saturday morning. There will be encore for this Met Opera production 6:30pm Wednesday, Jan. 5. [GS]
