Dr. Jose Antonio Abreu began El Sistema—an afterschool program that taught classical music to kids in Venuzuela—35 years ago. Inspired by such, Youth Orchestra Salinas (YOSAL) began this past July and played most recently at Del Monte Center's tree lighting on Nov. 20. They step up their free performance program across Salinas this week, sending their recorder ensemble to accompany the Hartnell Orchestra at Hartnell College at 7:30pm on Thursday; sing carols at Sherwood Village (800 N. Main St.) at 5pm on Friday; their juniors sing at Steinbeck Center noon Sunday; there is a La Posada 6pm Wednesday at 940 N. Main St., and return there 5pm Jan. 17 for a composer's showcase. [WR]
