Though this satire is loosely based on Elvis Presley's skyrocketing popularity and Army draft service, the star, Conrad Birdie, is named after Presley rival and country singer Conrad Twitty. Birdie, having captured the hearts of teens in late-'50s/early-'60s America, is managed by a financially desperate Albert Peterson and his no-nonsense secretary, Rosie. When Birdie is drafted, Albert sets up a going away show in which a lucky girl gets to kiss the rock 'n' roll star on the Ed Sullivan Show. But that comes with its own complications. Elvis Presley is a hot topic on local youth theater stages. This production runs to Feb. 13. [WR]
