Singer Julie Capili will join local trumpeter Stan Soroken for a midweek jazz session. Soroken has been playing trumpet professionally since 1953 and toured with the 7th Army Good Will Symphony Orchestra in Europe in 1969. Capili, who moved to Monterey from Honolulu, recently completed her first full-length jazz LP, Passing Fancies. On her rendition of Cab Calloway’s “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea,” Capili channels the skat-master while infusing her own playful, vocal style. And on Etta James’ “At Last,” she displays an irresistible self-assuredness that oozes sexy. [AJ]
