Brazilian drumming group the Sambahemians enlivens Chautauqua Hall's weekly free-style dance jam this Friday in celebration of Mardi Gras season. The Sambahemians is a spicy and energetic 15-person band, playing a wide array of Brazilian percussion instruments, from the tamborim to the timba. Tonight, they collaborate with the dance jam to celebrate Mardi Gras in honor of the Carnival season that is taking place in Haiti. Since Carnival is the most important celebration of the year there, the dance jam uses it as an opportunity to show solidarity; all proceeds from the event go to a Haitian nonprofit that serves its local disadvantaged people. The community is invited to wear costumes and bright colors and hit the dance floor both for the bright side and the dark side of Mardi Gras. [MQ]
