As film festivals go, this one is loaded with heavyweights. First up, Jan. 7 and 8, is David Lean's 1962 epic film (did he make any other kind of film?) Lawrence of Arabia, starring Peter O'Toole, Anthony Quinn and Omar Sharif. War never looked so romantic—or barbaric. Jan. 14-15 brings Maltese Falcon, the classic crime noir in which Humphrey Bogart further cements his status as not just a star, but as The Man. Jan. 21-22, Gone with the Wind blows into town and onto the big screen—see what I mean? Heavyweights all. On Jan. 28-29, West Side Story, featuring starlet Natalie Woods, ends the festival with music and violence, love and choreography. It goes on like that, every Thursday and Friday, with seminal and entertaining stuff like Bridge Over the River Kwai (Feb. 4-5), Rear Window (Feb. 11-12), North by Northwest (Feb. 18-19), etc., through April.
