Two years ago Paper Wing staged this true-story melodrama, written by Stephen Bergman and Janet Surrey, about the two men who leaned on each other to escape their crushing bouts of alcohol addiction and who later formed Alcoholics Anoynymous. Failed stockbroker Bill Wilson (L.j. Brewer), struggling with the bottle and its inherent demons, reached out to a clergyman to get him in contact with a drunk—any drunk—for fellowship. He turned out to be surgeon Dr. Bob Smith (Chuck Messenger), who would operate while inebriated. The two struck up a sometimes rocky friendship, but also served as each other's rock, helping each other sober up before founding AA on June 10, 1935, and helping thousands and thousands of others do the same. Few companies wrestle so convincingly with demons as Paper Wing. It runs to Jan. 17. [WR]
