Ansel Adams is the creator of a legacy of photographs that captured the landscape, as well as the spirit, of the American West. He began to assemble "museum sets" of his images to display at museums and institutions--a monumental and personally handpicked collection that his death in 1984 cut short of completion. But one of the few complete sets is currently on tour and MMA-La Mirada is the only West Coast venue to receive the collection of 70-plus images. It represents Adams curating himself, for posterity, for us. It opens with a members' preview and opening reception Thursday, July 8 ($50/person, $75/two people) with Adams' daughter, Anne Adams Helms, in attendance, and thereafter resides at the museum until Oct. 3 for everyone to see one of the most pristine and iconic portraits of America in art.
