The second film in the beloved Films in the Forest series alights on John Hughes's uncomon teen comedy. Ferris Beuller, played to a tee by a young and precocious Matthew Broderick, looks right at you and starts talking about his musings on life and trials as a teenager in the suburbs. The quirky, intelligent, well-paced and, now, iconic film balances moments of pure camera zanieness (the race against his parents to get home) with sensitive and meditative dialogue. Now that I think about it, the stylish 2000 comedy High Fidelity, starring John Cusack, could stand in for a natural unintended sequel, covering life as a young man. A great movie, screened at an outdoor enclave surrounded by pine trees with your own food and wine while reclining on your blanket next to your family, friends and neighbors...I think they call it the good life.
