Noted author and essayist Phyllis Theroux will be speaking about her newest book, The Journal Keeper: A Memoir in a "Meet The Author'' event sponsored by the Monterey Public Library. Born in San Francisco, Theroux was a contributior to the Newshour with Jim Lehrer for many years, and the author of previous books including California and Other States of Grace and the essay collection, Peripheral Visions. Her new book, partly set in the climes of Carmel and Big Sur, opens a window on her attempts to deal with her new life as she deals with the end of her marriage, and her mother's fight with a fatal illness. "There have been very few times in my life when a voice this clear has spoken to me,'' she writes. "But every once in a while a deeper wisdom, trying to spean beneath the din, breaks through. Some days I am quiet enough to hear it." [PW]
