For the first play of the re-organized and renewed Forest Theater Guild, the local theater pillar and nonprofit revisits its roots, which go back a century, to revive classical plays once performed by Bohemian luminaries at the Outdoor Forest Theater. Taking the lead is Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, a sophisticated coming-of-age morality tale as well as an adventure yarn, likely based on locales like his family home in the Scottish Highlands and our own Point Lobos. Its influence on subsequent pirate lore runs deep; peg-legged seamen with parrots on their shoulders and treasure maps marked with an "X" come from Treasure Island. And Pirates of the Caribbean would be A Bunch of Guys on a Boat without the traditions gleaned from Treasure Island. The Guild's production stars 10-year-old performing phenom Tanner Gray as Jim Hawkins, Keith Dekker as Long John Silver, Ken Cusson as Squire Trelawney and more familiar faces and names, directed by Mark Engelhorn. It runs, under the evening stars and afternoon sun, to June 20. (See Theater story.) [WR]
