The winner of the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and a finalist for the Pulitzer, The Clean House represents the second production of a Sarah Ruhl-penned play currently running in Monterey County. (This, after a double-header of David Mamet’s November and the other Mamet number at Cherry). The romantic comedy drops in on Lane (PacRep’s Julie Hughett), a woman doctor whose model life is polished clean-and who would like her house to look the same-who hires Matilde (guest equity actress Rami Margron), a Brazilian aspiring comedienne, as a housekeeper. But Matilde is more concerned with formulating the perfect joke instead of cleaning: “If the floor is dirty, look at the ceiling.” To complicate matters, Lane’s husband, Charles (equity actor Remi Sandri), has an affair with another woman while Lane’s sister, Virginia (MaryAnn Rousseau) shows up to interject some sisterly advice. John Rousseau directs as they all get down and dirty in themes of comedy, class and love. It runs to July 3. [WR]
